The America’s Cup comes to Plymouth
June 2nd, 2011
I am sure by now everyone is well aware that the 2nd round of The America’s Cup World Series, 2nd event is going to be held in our great city (10 – 18 Sept to be precise ) and trust me on this, this event is going to be huge on a worldwide scale. It really is a fantastic opportunity for Plymouth to be shown in all its glory, across the world, in a new light (and perhaps people will finally stop mistaking us for Portsmouth!). Not only will millions be watching on T.V. but we are anticipating in excess of 1/2 million visitors to come and watch the racing. We as a city really do need to get our act together, put on our best bib and tucker and really show what we can do. Here at the Fisherman’s we are already taking bookings for this time and i am looking forward to cooking for, and welcoming this huge influx of visitors. However, one thing concerns me and it is this, will the City Council and Wales and West utilities have sorted out this absolute total shambles of the gas main repairs by then? I know they are scheduled to finish in November so just how are they going to cope with 1/2 million extra people, when it is turmoil here at the moment. We have all suffered a huge drop in trade with the inept way the main roads have been closed around us, and this should be a golden opportunity to try and claw back some of the loss of business we have all suffered. All of us in the private hospitality sector will be doing our very best to show what a vibrant, wonderful, clean, go ahead city we all live and work in, Please, Plymouth city council and Wales and West Utilities, do not let us down.

Fallus Meetings
(Fisherman’s Arms Lads & Lasses United in Socializing)
We are proposing to run 3 trips this year and the tentative dates are as follows
1 Monday in early May – Another jaunt on the high seas day boat fishing – Jim, our old stalwart & patriarch of this fine establishment will see Richard and confirm dates available, price etc – THANKS DAAAD
(I think we can safely assume that Matt & Uncle Ted will not be coming on this one!)
Mon 5th September – A fine days racing at Newton Abbott
Mon in early November – A trip to 2 breweries, Healys Cider Farm, (yup Dave, that’s where they make your beloved Rattler), followed by a trip to St Austell Brewery for a looksee and no doubt some tastings will be involved!
As soon as I can firm up the dates and the travel arrangements (Mark the Bus!) I will let everyone know as soon as possible, but can you pls express your interest in attending at the bar.
A.O.B.
Don’t forget Mothers Day on Sunday the 3rd April, go on treat the old girl (you know she`s worth it – probably!) to the best Sunday roast in Plymouth, failing that if they are full we are now taking reservations as well.
Please don’t shoot us, we are only the messengers, but it was St Austells decision to stop brewing HSD, not ours, there is a possibility it will be coming out as a seasonal summer cask ale though, so if its your favourite tipple all is not completely lost, and I will be stocking bottles of the stuff year round.
Quote of the Day
“My rule of life prescribed as an absolutely sacred rite smoking cigars and also the drinking of alcohol before, after and if need be during all meals and in the intervals between them” Winston Churchill
Gotta go now, got some cooking to do – Bye bye

Fallus – The Inaugural Meeting
September 23rd, 2010

Maureen & Jims Trophy
Fallus – A name full of innuendo, yes of course it is, but what a great excuse to meet up with good friends in your local pub, chew the fat and eat, drink and be merry.
It all started when we arranged to meet and de-brief our fishing trip that evening, all suitably showered ( trust me, we needed it), fed and rested, we all now needed to be well watered and met that evening at 8. After happily downing our first couple of drinks (about 2 mins !) Debs and John asked if they could have our attention and they then proceeded to announce the formation of FALLUS, or The Fishermans arms Lads and Lasses United in Socialising, they then went one step further and much to all of our delight had prizes and certificates for all members who attended the fishing trip. I got a gold medal for catching the first and most fish, and being the landlord hold the proud title of Head Member – Fallus ! ( I nearly welled up being bestowed with such a title, proud and honoured cannot describe my emotions!) However, I managed to hold them in check and got a round in. The main presentation of the evening went to Maureen and Jim, (frankly I think its because Maureen is just so nice and Jim because he may be the elder statesman but he can drink all of us under the table and leads us all astray). So there we have, the formation of a new society(and many, many thanks to John & Debs for arranging it all), Fallus and god help us all !!!
Founder Members – Martyn, Pauline, Debs,John,Maureen, Jim, Stan,Nigel,Uncle Ted.
Next meeting – “Boozy Breakfast”, A thursday to be announced, Venue – Bistro One.

Plymouth Flavourfest, Public Demo`s & Behind The Scenes.
September 22nd, 2010
I had, against my better judgement been co-erced, bullied, had my arm twisted into agreeing to do a chef`s demo at this years Plymouth’s Flavour fest, this was probably in March , no problem I thought, August is ages away ! All of a sudden it was June/July and I had a letter from the organisers saying my demo was confirmed and I would be on stage at 12 noon, Fri 13th August. After convincing myself that I am really not superstitious and that Fri the 13th is just another day, I had a closer look at the line up and saw that I would be following the Tanner Brothers and Peter Gorton and immediately preceding the ready steady cook challenge with the current Argyle manager Peter Reid and Gordon Sparks, all of whom were guaranteed to draw big crowds, no pressure there then ! but again, shrug it off and think long time to go yet, think about it later (ha you fool? why is it when your at school every day last 10 years but when you grow up they last 10 minutes?)
All of a sudden it is the big day, to be honest I had been so busy here cooking I really hadn’t given it much thought but had decided, in keeping with the event to keep it local, use beer in at least one dish and to cook 3 courses, starter, main and dessert.
It was easy to decide on the courses once I had made my mind up, keeping it local had to be emphasis on the sea, one of my favourite things to cook anyway, so for the starter, crab millefeuille, mains Fowey estuary mussels with Cornish rattler cider (West-country Moules Marinere) and a Raspberry Eton Mess using Tamar raspberries and Langage Farm cream.
After hastily packing all the essential ingredients into the cool boxes ( and calming my wife’s nerves down) we arrived at the stage and were met and ushered behind the scenes by Jacques Marchal and began prepping. Chris Tanner came over and said a friendly hello and after comparing ingredients and a bit of “cheffy” talk warned me that the site of the stage was in effect at the end of a wind tunnel and the gas rings keep on going out. We were then quickly miked up and all of a sudden Liz Lawson was announcing us and before we knew it we were on!
To be honest our alloted half hour flew by, Jacques was a great help and helped make it seem a lot easier than it probably was, and Pauline did a great job helping me do the Eton Mess! The crowd were fantastic and to be honest I thoroughly enjoyed myself (I hadnt realised I was such a show off!)
All in all Plymouth Flavourfest is a huge benefit to Plymouth, it has a great and diverse range of foodie stalls, kids theatre as well as the cookery theatre and this is down in no small measure to the 2 main organisers, Jacques Marchal and Liz Lawson, who must be given massive credit where credit is due, nice one guys. I would also like personally to thank Jacques and Liz for their help in arranging my demo, Marc Bishop at St Austell for his encouragement and all of my friends and customers who turned out in such large numbers to support me, thanks everyone, and here’s to next years event, I cant wait.
