Fallus Meetings

(Fisherman’s Arms Lads & Lasses United in Socializing)

We are proposing to run 3 trips this year and the tentative dates are as follows

1 Monday in early May – Another jaunt on the high seas day boat fishing – Jim, our old stalwart & patriarch of this fine establishment will see Richard and confirm dates available, price etc – THANKS DAAAD

(I think we can safely assume that Matt & Uncle Ted will not be coming on this one!)

Mon 5th September – A fine days racing at Newton Abbott

Mon in early November – A trip to 2 breweries, Healys Cider Farm, (yup Dave, that’s where they make your beloved Rattler), followed by a trip to St Austell Brewery for a looksee and no doubt some tastings will be involved!

As soon as I can firm up the dates and the travel arrangements (Mark the Bus!) I will let everyone know as soon as possible, but can you pls express your interest in attending at the bar.

A.O.B.

Don’t forget Mothers Day on Sunday the 3rd April, go on treat the old girl (you know she`s worth it – probably!) to the best Sunday roast in Plymouth, failing that if they are full we are now taking reservations as well.

Please don’t shoot us, we are only the messengers, but it was St Austells decision to stop brewing HSD, not ours, there is a possibility it will be coming out as a seasonal summer cask ale though, so if its your favourite tipple all is not completely lost, and I will be stocking bottles of the stuff year round.

Quote of the Day

“My rule of life prescribed as an absolutely sacred rite smoking cigars and also the drinking of alcohol before, after and if need be during all meals and in the intervals between them”  Winston Churchill

Gotta go now, got some cooking to do – Bye bye

 New Draft Ale

Our new 4th real ale tap is now up and running and I’m pleased to say we have gone for Dartmoor Best Bitter, its an easy drinking session ale witha hint of bitterness offset by a smooth malty finish. At 3.9% you can still walk home after more than a couple of pints rather than doing the “HSD Wobble”!

We are delighted to say that this years Christmas Draw will see all the proceeds going St Lukes Hospice, its a great cause so please dig deep. We also welcome any donations as prizes so bring them along, they will be gratefully received.

We are now rapidly filling up fast for our Christmas December Menu, Christmas Day lunches and our New Years Eve 6 Courses matched with wine and champagne extravaganza, so if your thinking of coming, better get in quick now and give Pauline a ring.

New Draught Lager.

We are pleased to say that we have now had San Miguel installed on draught, (okay, we know most of you like your proper ale, but there are a few lager drinkers out there and we might as well stock a half decent one.)

Plymouth Pub Helps Launch Good Beer Guide

Real ale lovers in Plymouth will be delighted to hear the historic Fisherman’s Arms has made a welcome return to the Good Beer Guide 2011.

On Monday (Sept 13) the Barbican pub – reputed to be the second oldest in the city – hosted the launch of the 38th handbook, featuring 4,500 pubs across the country serving the best real ale.

The Good Beer Guide, produced by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), is completely independent and each pub is checked several times a year.

Landlords Martyn and Pauline Scott, who took over the Fisherman’s Arms two years ago, said they were over the moon to be included in the guide.

“Unfortunately the Fisherman’s Arms was ineligible for the guide two years ago as we were new landlords – but it hasn’t taken us long to regain our status,” said Martyn.

“It’s a real honour for us to be recognised for the quality of our beer. We pride ourselves on our warm welcome and friendly atmosphere, which I’m sure added to our appeal. “

The Fisherman’s Arms is part of St Austell Brewery’s 176-strong estate and serves a range of the Cornish brewery’s award winning draught and bottled beers including Tribute, Proper Job, Admiral’s and Clouded Yellow.

Adam Luck, St Austell Brewery’s Estate Director, said: “We are proud to have the Fisherman’s Arms back where it belongs in the Good Beer Guide.

“It is both a testament to our award-winning ales and Martyn and Pauline’s hard work and enthusiasm as landlords.”?

Pub quiz raises funds for St Luke’s

Plymouth’s branch of the Campaign for Real Ale and a Barbican pub have raised £158 for cancer charity St Luke’s Hospice.

The Fishermans Arms pub held a beer-themed quiz and raffle event, forming part of CAMRA’s celebration of Cask Ale Week, promoting Britain’s national drink.

Licensee Martyn Scott said: “I was delighted to host the event. We had a great night.

“I’d like to extend the warmest thanks to all those who came along and made the evening such a success.”

Dating from the 17th century, the Fishermans Arms is the oldest pub located on the Barbican, in Lambhay Street.

Rob Hick, Plymouth CAMRA spokesman and quizmaster for the evening, added: “It was a brilliant evening. I really hope we can do something similar next year. The questions were tough, but I think everybody enjoyed themselves!

“And I really must give my thanks to Martyn for making it all happen.”

Forming in 1971, CAMRA is a voluntary consumer organisation with more than 100,000 members. It promotes good-quality real ale and pubs.
